PROPPA is currently a volunteer organisation set on making our County Durham mining villages thrive again. In 1944, there were around 100,000 mineworkers spread across around 230 collieries in Durham. All collieries flourished along the wear valley with proppa jobs, proppa industry and a proppa future there for anyone who wanted one. This is far from the current landscape.
Since the pit closures the County Durham former mining towns have no purpose, their integration into normal villages and towns have faced the lasting effects of austerity. There have been no substantial reinvestments or repurposing projects implemented to ensure these villages and their hardworking communities that once made the coal industry thrive aren't left behind to diminish along with the mines and their history.
PROPPA is a non-political volunteer organisation set up by author Pip Fallow, born in Blackhall Colliery, who created the Proppa Jobs Campaign. We currently have a list of 20+ dedicated volunteers and a growing community interest all working to achieve our vision, to reawaken, regenerate and re-energise our East Durham mining villages.

We recognise the impending social issues and austerity that has increased year on year since the pit closures in 1984. We want to change this through creating opportunity and reviving communities through re-industrialisation and education. Our starting point is Blackhall Colliery, Easington, Horden and the surrounding areas. Our first step is growing our campaign and legitimising our organisation, so we can do the work that needs to be done.
We believe that opportunities available in the mining villages across the North East are diminishing, our Proppa Jobs Campaign is our main mission and ongoing work within Blackhall Colliery, Easington and Horden communities, extending to the surrounding areas to create opportunity through creating access to fulfilling local jobs, through early intervention, education and community led projects.
We're working hard to legitimise PROPPA.ORG into a community interest company (CIC) so we can continue to make positive steps to achieve our main vision as a long term goal, while planning, implementing and achieving community led projects at every step of the way.
